MESSAGE FOR EL SALVADOR CONFERENCE

Prof. Cees J. Hamelink

Much to my regret I am unable to join you and can only contribute to the conference through this brief electronic message. At the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights we have to conclude that the worldwide lack of implementation of human rights standards, poses the most serious challenge to the human rights regime. There is abundant evidence that these standards -and among them the right to communicate- are around the world almost incessantly violated. The only force that can ultimately transform this situation are we ourselves. Ordinary people, practioners and students of social communication. The most important reason for us to speak up is that we have to let the victims of human rights abuse know that they are not forgotten. We have to use our voices when they are silenced. The odds are against us as a money-centered culture seems to proliferate around the globe that leaves no space for compassion and solidarity. Yet, against such developments, a movement such as the People's Communication Charter is gaining momentum worldwide and it is my hope that also your gathering will support this people's effort to lead us towards the implementation of human rights in the 21st century. If we fail, there will be no reason to celebrate the centenary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
